Niue Facts

This week is Niuean language week ! I have learnt some facts about the island that I am going to be sharing them with you! Fact 1. Niue is a tiny country in the pacific ocean, a free country, but still not a UN member. Just like the Cook Islands, Niue is in free association with New Zealand, so it's basically represented by it. Furthermore, since New Zealand's the head of state is Queen Elizabeth ll, she is also Niue's monarch. Fact 2. The entire country is just one island, with an area of 260 square km and a population of 1200 people. That means that the entire country is only around 6 times smaller than london. Even more suprising is that 90 to 95% of all niuean ethnics in the world live in New Zealand, not Niue. Fact 3. Despite it's small size, Niue does have a capital, but it's not exactly a city, but rather a village called Alofi. Alofi has a population of less than 1000 people and it consists of two villages: Alofi north and Alofi south. Alofi is the worlds smallest capital by population, after Palau's Capital Ngerulmud. Fact 4. The famous James Cook was the first European to site Niue, in 1774. He named the island "Savage Island" because the people didn't let him land and appeared to be painted in blood. His name stuck for centuries, until the original name was reinstated, a name which means "behold the coconut" Fact 5. In 1885 Niueans wrote to Queen Victoria of the UK to willingly join her empire. but it was only in 1901 that Niue was brought witing the boundaries of New Zealand. In 1974 New Zealand restored Niue's self goverance, after a referendum in which most people opted for it. Fact 6. In it's entire history, Niue had only one political party: The Niue people's party. but even this party didn't last long, as it was disbanded in 2003. As of 2017, there a no political parties in Niue, only independent MP's. Fact 7. because Niue is a raised coral attol, it has geograghy and coastline like few other Islands. The cave systems are among the most spectacular and intensive in the south pacific. It's not suprising that niue is one of the most appreciated destinations in the entire pacific. Here's the link to the video If you want to know which one I got these facts from.
